A small thing

March 24th, 2010 Comments off

Last night, I invited one of my roommates to watch movies in the library. As our tastes were quite different,it took us a long time to reach an agreement on which movie to pick up. Finally, we chose “Pretty Woman”. It happened that my friend’s favourite movie “VS Kramer” was on channel just then. So we watched that one first, then the “Pretty Woman”. In this case, 2 hours’ time could hardly be enough to finish the movie. At about 9:30, all the other audiences began to leave except us. We shrugged to each other and prepared to take out the videotape. Just at that moment, the librarian walked towards us. At first, we thought she was coming to ask us to leave. when we immediately told her we were about to go,To our surprise, while smiling, she said: “You two came a bit late; I guess you haven’t finished that “Pretty Woman”, right?” We nodded. “You can go on and I’ll wait. I know watching movie without an ending must be quite painful.” So she went away and did some other picking work. We felt so grateful to her at that moment. Actually, “Pretty Woman” was such a famous movie that its ending was quite familiar to us. It soon got to10:00, but we didn’t know why that the movie was still going on and on. We really began to feel regret for keeping the kind lady waiting for us so long. We turned around and found her keeping a distance away and watching us through the window, with a smile that impressed me so much. She was just the pretty woman in real life and I felt love was just surrounding me.
Actually, love is everywhere in this world. If you observe carefully, you are sure to find some.

When is a Man Old?

November 22nd, 2009 No comments

“I dread to come to the end of the year, said a friend to me recently, “it makes me realize I am growing old.”

William James, the great psychologist, said that most men are “old fogies at twenty-five”,He was right. Most men at twenty-five are satisfied with their jobs. They have accumulated the little stock of prejudices that they call their “Principles, ” and closed their minds to all new ideas; they have ceased to grow.

The minutea man ceases to grow-no matter what his years-that minute he begins to be old. On the other hand, the really great man never grows old.

Goethe passed out at eighty-three, and finished his Faust only a few years earlier; Gladstone took up a new language when he was seventy. Laplace, the astronomer, was still at work when death caught up with him at seventy-eight. He died crying, “What we know is nothing; what we do not know is immense.”

And there you have the real answer to the question, “When is a man old?”

Laplace at seventy-eight died young. He was still unsatisfied, still sure that he had a lot to learn.

As long as a man can keep himself in that attitude of mind, as long as he can look back on every year and say , “I grew,” he is still young.

The minute he ceases to grow, the minute he says to himself, “I know all that I need to know,”–that day youth stops. He may be twenty-five or seventy-five, it makes no difference. On that day he begins to be old.

The Modern Begging

November 18th, 2009 No comments

Beggars are used to refer to the people who were impelled by life and obliged to beg to keep their life. With the modernization of society, begging has advanced a lot. The modern begging has changed a lot.
First, the beggar’s attitudes towards begging become mature. They used to feel ashamed and inferior to others. What they wanted to get was the things to keep them alive at the expense of the self-esteem. The poorest fate of a person was driven onto begging. But nowadays they seem to get mature. They feel at ease and justified to be beggars. When they are begging, they don’t feel uneasy and nervous. It looks like that we owe them money and they just to ask what belong to them. They claim that what they want is money other than food and clothes. Their status has changed by themselves.
In addition to, the purpose of begging changed. In the old days, they begged to live. But the wind of modernization has blown their mind; they want to keep up with the rhythm of age. So begging becomes a kind of means to be rich. They earn money at the expense of people’s sympathy and goodness. According to a newspaper, once a policeman caught about 20 beggars, nine of whom have BP calls and three have mobile phones. Their life really improved a lot. By this efficient ways, they seem make more money than common people.
In order to develop this career successfully, they create various methods.
Maybe you have ever met such thing. You just stand in a bus stop to wait for a bus. At this time, a middle-aged woman comes to you and ask: “ would you please give me one Yuan, I have no money to take bus.” You are sympathized with the poor woman then you give her money. The bus comes and you get on the bus. Maybe at this time you still take pity on the woman. But the poor woman begs for another person to get one Yuan to take bus.
This kind of things happens everyday. The place may be the bus stop, the gate of famous scene, hospitals and campus etc. they make full use of people’s innocence. Once one of my teachers told us that she gave a man money on the way to class because he said his money had been stolen and he had no money to eat at all. When she finished her class, she went to the hospital to visit her friend. She unexpectedly met that man. He still asked her for money. When he recognized she was just the person who had given money to him, my teacher had thought that he would be ashamed and embarrassed, but she was disappointed. He just turned to others to keep on begging calmly without a little shame.
In recent years, all of a sudden there were many poor boys and girls in the street with a board in which their poor experience were listed. Most of them past the college entrance examination but because of the tuition they cannot go to study. When first youth appeared, people would feel heart-broken and give money. But to the sudden popularity of the poor children, people were puzzled and hesitated. How could they support so many wretched students? Their pity and compassion could give the students material things but couldn’t save their souls.
The most shocking thing was that some people make use of the mentality that people are easier to show sympathy for children. They gathered many children about 10 years and dressed them in rags, then let these children beg for people while they just stood secretly to observe.
There are also some other methods they employed to carry out their begging. The methods listed above are some familiar ones. Maybe now there are some new creative methods appeared in our life covertly.
With these innovative methods to get people’s compassion the begging will be unprecedented prosperous. We cannot help being amazed at the prompt progress of begging. Maybe later when people find that their work is not so prosperous than the begging, the team of the begging will be stronger.
